12 injured in after-creek accident

A day at the creek ended horribly for some city residents when the pick-up in which they were traveling turned turtle on the East Bank Demerara Public Road in the vicinity of Land of Canaan yesterday afternoon.

Twelve of the creek-goers were injured after the driver of their pick-up swerved to avoid colliding with a minibus.

The injured almost overwhelmed the Accident and Emergency unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital , forcing medical personnel to devise a system to deal with the most seriously injured first.

Most of the victims sustained cuts and bruises, except for one woman, Rosanna King, of Kitty Public Road , who is suspected to have a fractured shoulder and another male who was suffering from spinal injuries.

According to reports, the pick-up was traveling in a northerly direction when the minibus, which was approaching from the opposite direction, drove into their path after overtaking another vehicle.

An eyewitness said that the driver of the pick-up took evasive action which led to the vehicle spinning out of control and landing in a nearby trench.

The passengers were hurled into the canal and amidst much panic and fear, eventually made it out and were subsequently transported to the hospital.
