Police 'given up' on Annandale deaths - relatives

Rukmini Singh

Relatives of the couple who were found dead in a trench behind their yard at Annandale earlier this month say the police seem to have given up on the investigations.

The bodies of Rukmini Singh and Rajesh Somra were recovered from a deep trench behind their yard about one hour after persons had heard splashing in the water.

Unsolved murders

Somra's father said police had told them already that they had little or no clue to determine how they died and there was nothing they could do.

The elder Somra said he drew from that statement that the police had given up, noting that no one was being questioned; ranks no longer visited the scene and detectives were not in touch with family members.

"We just have to accept it like that and hope that we get justice from God," the dead man's father declared. Post-mortem results revealed that the couple were strangled and died from drowning. Both of them had displayed trauma to their heads reportedly made by a bloodied hammer which was found in their yard.

A senior police officer on the East Coast had told this newspaper that it was their view that a third person was involved in the shocking murders.

This, he said, effectively ruled out suggestions that the couple who frequently quarrelled had a squabble which later turned deadly.

Neighbours had reportedly heard the woman hollering and then later there was a splash in a trench behind their yard.

When checks were made the couple's only door was swung wide open, blood spots lined the floors right down to the steps, a bucket with water was contaminated with blood and a bloodied hammer was lying a few inches away from the steps.
