The first
of two consignments was presented by Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Avinash
Gupta, to Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy at a simple ceremony at the
Indian Cultural Centre in Georgetown.
The
medicines were manufactured by leading Indian pharmaceuticals and included
35,000 bottles Amoxycillin suspension, 100,000 Ciprofloxacin tablets, 50,000
Griseofulivin tabs, 100,000 Amoxycillin capsules, 50,000 Albendazole tablets,
50,000 Captopril tablets, 2,000 bottles Co-trimoxaziole suspension, 1,000 vials
Ampicillin injection , 500 vials Chlorophenicol injection and Doycycline tablets
for the treatment of leptospirosis and a host of other bacterial, fungal and
parasitic infestations associated with flooding.
The Indian
High Commissioner, in brief remarks at the handing-over ceremony, said he deeply
appreciated the efforts by the people and Government of Guyana towards the
current relief operations.
“I hope
that these medicines will lessen the sufferings of Guyanese to some extent and
will go a long way in the treatment of flood-related diseases,” Gupta said.
Minister
Ramsammy, in accepting the consignment on behalf of the people and Government of
Guyana, assured the Indian High Commissioner that this was a timely donation.
Gupta told
the Chronicle that the second consignment of medicines/pharmaceuticals
consisting of a number of injectables and Doxycycline will be presented to the
Guyana Government by the end of this month or the beginning of next month.
He said
the local market value of the second consignment would almost be the same as the
consignment ($20M) which was presented yesterday.
“The
Government of India is saddened with the news of the serious flooding that is
affecting Guyana today (and) on my personal behalf and on behalf of my
government, I would like to convey my sympathies to the people and Government of
Guyana,” Gupta said.
“We are
also greatly appreciative of the efforts exerted by the Guyana Government
towards relief operations which, I am sure, have lessened the suffering of
Guyanese who have very bravely faced this calamity.”
Over the years, India has made significant strides in the manufacture of drugs and pharmaceuticals of international quality which are many times cheaper than the medicines of comparative qualities in the international market, he noted.
