PNCR must try to win Indian votes

Dear Editor

I refer to Dr David Hinds contention that ".....there can be no Indian, Amerindian, Portuguese, Chinese and White security if African Guyanese security is denied" in his letter captioned "power sharing is indispensable to African Guyanese security" (5.8.2004).

Basically, what Mr Hinds is saying to all Guyanese is that if Afro-Guyanese cannot rule Guyana no one is going to rule. That is the same position that is held by the Opposition PNCR, that is, if the PNCR are not in government there is not going to be peace and security. This can be seen by their "slow fire, more fire" campaign, their attempts to drive out investors and by them making the country ungovernable (through the boycott of parliament). That is pure and simple spite.

The PNCR needs to learn that it needs to work with the majority population, who are Indo-Guyanese, so that it can become electable. Only by providing what the majority of the population wants will the PNCR succeed in being in government.

Guyanese (Afro-Guy-anese, Indo-Guyanese, Chin-ese, Portuguese, Amerin-dians, etc) have an integrated history.

This shared history was bequeathed to us by the colonial masters. There is no escaping it. The Japanese have a term for it "the burden of history". It is this shared history that makes us stronger. So let us unite and fight to make Guyana a better place to live in instead of poisoning the well.

Yours faithfully,

Sean Adams
