GPHC
official sent on leave after
$300,000 disappears
A
SENIOR official of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)
has been sent on leave following the disappearance of
$300,000 from a drawer in the Acccounts Department, a top
official said yesterday.

Finance
Director Karimullah (only name stated) will remain off the
job pending investigations surrounding the missing money,
GPHC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Michael Khan disclosed.

Khan
said the discovery was made early yesterday morning when
other employees arrived at their workplace where there were
no signs of forced entry.
He
said it appears that someone had a key to the building and
broke into the drawer.

Khan
told the Guyana Chronicle the sum was part of $2M earmarked
to pay nurses for overtime.
A
maid at the institution, Pamela Broomes said she reported
for duty about 06:00 h and went to clean the Accounts
Department, as usual.

It
was around 06:20 h that she saw the drawer open and,
suspecting that something was amiss, alerted internal
security personnel who summoned the Police.
Detectives
are reportedly working on the theory that the theft occurred
Monday night and the thief was an employee who had access to
keys for the premises.
