Police were on alert last night for a blue and grey Toyota corona PGG 1018 which was reportedly hijacked by three gunmen in the city.

While details of the incident are sketchy, this newspaper was informed that an all station alert was activated, after the driver reported the matter to the police.

Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the driver Roy Pemberton of Vryhied's Lust East Coast Demerara, picked up the three men in the city around 21:00 hours.

While driving, a gun as placed to his head and one of the men ordered him out of the driver's seat.

According to a source the men placed Pemberton into the back seat and while one of them held him at gunpoint, they proceeded to drive around the city for close to an hour.

The source added that the men drove as far as South Ruimveldt and appeared to be looking for someone.

The men then drove to Carifesta Avenue where they threw out Pemberton's spare wheel from the car trunk and placed him inside.

But as they were proceeding in the vicinity of the 1763 monument, they were forced to low down to negotiate the traffic near the stop light.

Pemberton used the opportunity to open the lid of the trunk and flee.

He reported the matter to the police, who accompanied him to retrieve his spare wheel. Up to press time the car had not been located.

Last week two suspects were pursued and caught by police after they fled from a car which they tried to hijack.

On that occasion, the driver of the car crashed the vehicle into the Camp Street Avenue after a gun was placed to his head.

The two suspects have since been charged and have been remanded to prison.
